The God of Mormonism

We had a great talk yesterday with an ex-Mormon missionary. He mentioned that Mormonism was as different from true Christianity as was Islam. Ergun Caner has said that Islam can be described as medieval Mormonism: “Anything Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism) did, Mohammed had already done.” Both religions have “corrected” version of Scripture, call Jesus a prophet, turn salvation into a works-based religion, and turn women into sexual slaves.

This might seem harsh. How much of it is true? For now let's look at what Mormonism teaches about God (after all, if we can't agree on who God i, the rest is not very important!). We can let the Mormons speak for themselves - which of these sound like the single, triune God of Christianity?

Founder / Prophet Joseph Smith:

"I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of the Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods" (History of the Church, 6:474).

"God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 345).

"The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's" (D&C 130:22).

"We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith,  345).

Second Mormon Prophet / President Brigham Young:

"How many Gods there are, I do not know. But there never was a time when there were not Gods" (Journal of Discourses 7:333).

"Some would have us believe that God is present everywhere. It is not so" (Journal of Discourses 6:345).

Apostle Orson Pratt:

"We were begotten by our Father in Heaven; the person of our Father in Heaven was begotten on a previous heavenly world by His Father; and again, He was begotten by a still more ancient Father, and so one, from one generation to generation" (The Seer, 132).

 Apostle John Widtsoe:

"God and man are of the same race, differing only in their degrees of advancement" (Gospel Through the Ages, 107).

Apostle Parley P. Pratt:

"God, angels, and men are all of the same species, one race, one great family" (Key to the Science of Theology,  21).

Apostle James Talmage:

"neither God the Father, nor any actual person of any one member of the Godhead can be physically present in more than one place at one time" (The Articles of Faith, 39).

The Doctrine of the Trinity

Part of our discussion yesterday concerned the doctrine of the Trinity, a belief that is often misunderstood or caricatured.

The Trinity is the term used to describe the fact that there is only one God, and yet that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons who are truly distinct one from one another: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The Athanasian Creed puts it this way: "The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and yet there are not three Gods but one God."

The Trinity is a doctrine, a belief based on God's revelation in Scripture that:

  • There is only one God (Dt. 6:4; Isa. 44:6; 1 Cor. 8:6; Eph. 4:6; 1 Tim. 2:5).
  • God is three distinct persons (Ps. 45:6, 110:1; Isa 63:7-10; Zech 1:12; Mt. 3:16-17, 28:19; Lk. 23:46;2 Cor. 13:14)
    • The Father (Jn. 6:27; Rom. 1:7; Gal. 1:1)
    • The Son (Mk. 2:5; 14:61-65; Jn. 1:1-5; 8:58; 10:11; Col 1:15-17; Heb. 1:1-15; Rev. 1:17)
    • The Holy Spirit (Gen 1:2 (cf. Isa. 44:6; Isa 63:7-9; Ps. 139:7; Acts 5:3-4; 2 Cor. 13:14; Heb 9:14)

Any explanation of the nature of God must account for all that the Bible teaches - not focusing on one aspect (like unity) at the expense of others (plurality). The Trinity successfully unites all that Scripture has to say about God without contradiction.

The Jewish Messiah for the Jewish People

Dr. Barry Leventhal was on recently speaking about his conversion to Christianity and several resources were mentioned on the show concerning sharing and defending one's faith. Here are a few:

Here are two great sources of information for discussing the Christian faith with the Jewish people:

Is Jesus the Only Way?

Aren’t there many roads to heaven? Don’t all paths lead to the same place? The majority of people believe there is more than one way to heaven. What does the Scripture say?

The Apostle Paul says Jesus Christ is the only way to God:

  • “For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.” (1 Timothy 2:5-6)
  • “If we died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us.” (1 Timothy 2:11-12)

The Apostle Peter says Jesus Christ is the only way to God:

  • “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

The Apostle John says Jesus Christ is the only way to God:

  • “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.” (1 John 5:11-12)
  • “Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.” (1 John 2:23)

The Savior Jesus Christ says that he is the only way to God:

  • "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.... but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (John 3:16, 18)
  • “No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” (Matthew 11:27)
  • “Who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36)
  • “Whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:33)
  • “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)

God only needs to say something once for it to be true, yet He inspired the authors of Scripture to record the same truth numerous times. It is clear that the Bible teaches that the only way to God is through Jesus Christ.

Ratio Christi

Ratio Christi (Latin for ‘The Reason of Christ’) is a Student Apologetics Alliance that seeks to encourage and strengthen the faith of Christian students at secular and liberal institutions across the country, while also sharing Christ's message and love to those that have yet to receive it, through the use of intellectual investigation and apologetics. Ratio Christi believes that Christians have failed to address the pressing questions of worldview, science, philosophy, history, etc. Consequently, the Secular Humanist worldview has overtaken the university and the minds of students. By situating apologetic clubs at universities across the nation, we hope to take part in the battle for the mind, and begin to reverse the Humanist trend of thought by providing and equipping students with the answers, or means of getting the answers, to the pressing questions of life.

"Ratio Christi is an idea that is way overdue - providing college students with a place to find the answers to the toughest questions that face the Christian college student. Summit Ministries is thrilled to endorse this project of one of our Summit graduates which has the potential to help hundreds, even thousands, of students to defend their faith and champion the Christian worldview."
David A. Noebel Founder and President of Summit Ministries

Ratio Christi is a non-profit, tax exempt organization (501c3) under the auspices of Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, NC, which seeks to place apologetics clubs at secular and liberal universities across the nation. These chapters have weekly meetings where students can wrestle with ideas relating to the intellectual credibility of Christianity. Scripture commands us not only to develop our heart, but also our minds (Matt 22:37), and Ratio Christi seeks to help university students fulfill this commandment.
